Background:
Like virtually all Formula 1 drivers, David started in go-karting, where he won the Scottish championship several times, and the British championship. In 1989 he won a Formula Ford 1600 championship, and in 1991 he finished second in the British Formula 3 series. More importantly, that same year he won the two most important international F3 competitions, the Macau Grand Prix and the Marlboro Masters. He raced in Formula 3000 in 1992 and 1993, finishing ninth the first year and third in the second year.
His Career Thus Far:
David's Formula 1 career began in difficult circumstances for the young driver, after he was hired to drive at the Williams team after Ayrton Senna was killed in an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix on May 1, 1994.

In his first year in Formula 1 he finished on the podium once, earned 14 points and placed eighth in the drivers' series. Today, although Coulthard has never won the championship or even come close to it, he has earned more points over his career than any other British driver.

Not only has Coulthard won 13 races in his career, but he has also pointed out that he has won all of the races that were most important to him and most drivers: The British Grand Prix, the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the French Grand Prix and above all, the Monaco Grand Prix, which he won in 2000 and in 2002.
Driving Style:
Coulthard has never been the fastest of drivers in terms of pure speed. But he is one of the most consistent drivers, and always seemed to keep out of trouble on the track and be capable of winning races and earning points for a team. He is also a fair driver, rarely creating controversy on the track, he gets the job done. But he has never shown much flash.

Character:
If his racing career started after the Senna tragedy, Coulthard would later himself narrowly escape tragedy, but not on the race track. In 2000, the private jet on which he and his trainer and fiancé were flying crashed in France. He escaped uninjured, but the pilot and co-pilot were killed. Coulthard helped his fiancé out of the aircraft and returned to the burning jet to find out if he could help the pilot and co-pilot. He injured his ribs, but raced in a the Spanish Grand Prix days later and finished second and then won the Monaco Grand Prix a month later, still in pain. Before that incident he was sometimes considered lacking in gutsiness on the track. In fact, the crash showed the difference between his natural courage and his good sense of racing safety.

Coulthard, who owns a hotel in Monaco and has always had the most glamorous women friends has always been one of the finest of gentlemen both on the track and off, whether it be in the paddock or away from the track.
